This is a fairy-tale comedy all about fencing. There are certainly duels and fencing scenes galore – made with the help of the Three Brothers Production fencing group, who had already worked with the TV team on films like Three Knights, a Pretty Maiden and a Flaxen Shirt, or The Pearl Maiden. Crossed Swords takes us back into the times and setting of The Three Musketeers, and this story, too, is full of royal intrigue, fights for the throne, dangerous battles and disguises, but it is mainly the story of a love so steadfast that it overcomes all evil strokes of fate. An old forest witch reveals to the young heroine how to make ointments and unguents to heal all sorts of ailments – so there we have the fairy-tale element. In short, it is a film for the old and the young, a programme for the whole family with strong touches of humour to supplement the drama.
