A film based on the book by Czech émigré, Viktor Fischl, set in a remote Jewish village in Moravia. In the 1930s the approaching holocaust is not yet reflected in their lives. People have been following the same rules and rituals for generations and there is no more than a hint of racial discrimination. The men and women of the village are immersed in their personal problems concerning faith, compassion, love and understanding. But the community, in which everyone always found sufficient compassion and pity, is finally subjected to a harsh reality: monstrous racial intolerance from people who have no such humility in their characters.
