Three tales make up this feature film, each encountered in or on a field of rye. In one, David has persuaded reluctant Katka to seek out a mystery, but her goal is a swimming hole across a flowing field. In another, a gang of boys builds a fort in a massive haystack only to be invaded by a beautiful and mysterious visitor who is willing to specially reward them for certain services. In the last, the protagonists of this melancholy autumn romance are an aging and rather weary bride and groom. Their journey to begin a new life ends in the mud of a post-harvest field, where they soon realize the despair and hope of saying 'I do.' The thematic glue which holds these tales together is discovery: their experiences 'catching' in the rye change the protagonists in fundamental ways.
