The documentary about Semyon Bychkov, Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Czech Philharmonic, is a comprehensive portrait of a unique, and occasionally contradictory, international conductor, and his journey to freedom at a turning point in Russian history. Born in Soviet Russia in the months before Stalin’s death, Semyon Bychkov experienced the era of the Iron Curtain from the East and crossed it in the mid-1970’s when he emigrated from Leningrad to Vienna before settling in the United States.
