A documentary film about Zdeněk Mácal, the present chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Zdeněk Mácal, the present chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra has worked with this ensemble before, in 1966. At the time they presented Bohuslav Martinů´s First Symphony at a concert held within the International Music Festival Prague Spring. He then went on tour abroad with the ensemble, and they also recorded gramophone discs together. In 1968, after the Soviet occupation, Zdeněk Mácal emigrated; since then he has conducted over 160 orchestras abroad. His return to his native land again came in connection with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, which he conducted in 1996 and 1997. In his new position of chief conductor, Mácal conducted the Czech Philharmonic during the first tour of the season in Germany (Weimar, Wiesbaden) and Italy (Merano) in August 2003. The documentary catches an over-all look at this outstanding personality of contemporary Czech music.
