Stabat Mater, the medieval liturgical text which has inspired many composers also inspired Antonín Dvořák. Dvořák divided the text into ten ballet miniatures and certainly never realized at the time that he was composing a piece of music which would bring him significant and permanent success. The most extensive section is the introduction, a piece which depicts the Crucifixion and dares express the thought – in a mere whisper – that death might not be as cruel and painful as dying.
