This documentary poses the difficult question of how to present historical tragedies to contemporary generations. A group of American tourists came to Europe seeking the cultural roots and ultimate fate of Jewish communities. The documentary charts their journey from two perspectives: firstly, of the Americans themselves, shocked at coming face to face with the Holocaust, and secondly, of the bizarre tourist industry that has sprung up around the former concentration camps and ruined Jewish cemeteries of Europe. In a way that links both perspectives, the Americans unwittingly become part of Holocaust tourism, a rapidly growing international business profiting from sites where millions of Jews were murdered.
